This rare perennial tends to be found in mesic prairies, where it will occasionally form colonies, and occasionally it is found in savannas. It is a slow growing species, but is quite showy in the fall. The white flowers are attractive to pollinators, especially bumblebees. It asscoiates with Elymus canadensis, Liatris spicata, and Monarda fistulosa.
