A true spring ephemeral of rich, mesic woodlands and floodplains, pale pink to sky blue flowers unfurl atop smooth, bright green foliage as early as March and through May depending on temperature. Virginia Bluebells are welcomed for their serene sweeps of color as well as an early pollen and nectar source for butterflies, skippers, hummingbird moths, hummingbirds, and especially, long-tongued bees. By mid-summer the plant disappears into dormancy.
