Acorus americanus

Sweet Flag

Beautiful and reliable, this wetland plant features lustrous green, sword like leaves that grow in basal clumps to about 3 feet tall. In late spring, this plant forms inconspicuous white spikes (spadices) that will turn brown in fall as seeds form. It prefers full to partial sun in wet, mucky ground or on shorelines. Common cohorts of Acorus calamus (Sweet Flag) include Asclepias incarnata, Iris virginica var. shrevei, and Calamagrostis canadensis. The leaves of this plant are very sweet smelling when bruised.
