Actaea pachypoda

Doll's Eyes

An attractive woodland native with foliage reminiscent of Astilbe, Actaea pachypoda (Doll’s Eyes) is named after its showy bright white berries with dark center spots on sturdy red stems. Small white flower clusters appear in spring on airy two-foot-tall plants. All plant parts, especially the berries, are poisonous, so are favored solely by birds. This common species of mesic woodlands and savannas can be found growing with Asarum canadense, Camassia scilloides, and Solidago flexicaulis.
