Actaea rubra

Red Baneberry

Actaea rubra (Red baneberry), found in wet to mesic woodlands, is uncommon in northern Illinois. It has a bushy habit and produces trifoliate leaves. Mature plants, produce fuzzy white flowers in spring, followed by red berries that will persist into the fall. It associates with Carex jamesii, Galium triflorum, and Trilium grandiflorum. Many desired native birds feed on its berries, which are toxic to mammals.
