The seven foot high stems of Big Bluestem characterize the tall grass prairie. This clumping warm season grass prefers prairie conditions in mesic to dry soils and becomes quite drought tolerant when established. The fall color is excellent, ranging from lavender to russet to gold. Black-eyed Susan, Wild Bergamot, and Stiff Goldenrod are often found nearby. Skippers and grasshoppers dine on the foliage while songbirds eat the seeds.
