A gray to bluish green warm season spreading grass that is only about five inches high, Buffalo Grass can make an attractive, drought tolerant lawn alternative. Tan seed heads are held on one side of the stem, resembling small eyelashes. It prefers prairie conditions with mesic to dry soils. The genus is named after Spanish botanist brothers Claudio and Esteban Bouteloua. Larval host for several skippers.
