Carex albicans

Whitetinge Sedge

Common to savannas and open woodlands, often in sandy soils, Whitetinge Sedge forms low, dense tufts of bright green, finely textured, thread-like leaves. Also known as Oak Sedge, it is drought tolerant and deer resistant. It is useful as a groundcover or lawn substitute in shady areas. Associates in Black Oak savannas include Cinna arundinacea, Geranium maculatum, and maianthemum racemosum. In mesic sandy woodlands, it is found growing with Acer rubrum, Geranium maculatum, Lindera benzoin, and Quercus alba. The seed is dispersed by ants.
