This annual can be found in wet to dry prairies and savannas. The foliage is pinnately compound and has a very architectural feel while the plants are still short. During the summer, large yellow flowers with dark purple anthers form between the sets of foliage. They reseed themselves heavily. Associated species include Asclepias tuberosa, Liatris spicata, and Schizahyrium scoparium.
