This grass grows along woodland borders and gravelly stream beds, although it also responds reasonably well to cultivation. It reaches up to four feet in height and three feet in width. Starting in August, it produces flattened seed heads that are lightly tinged with purple at the tips. These are often used in dried flower bouquets. It associates with Elymus virginicus, Lobelia cardinalis, and Saururus cernuus.
