Dodecatheon meadia

Midland Shooting Star

One of the loveliest spring wildflowers, Midland Shooting Star sends up a single flower cluster from each rosette of basal foliage beginning in April. The petals reflex upward on nodding heads from the yellowish base starting white and fading to pink or lavender. Bumblebees favor the pollen. The plant withers and goes dormant in the heat of summer. Shooting Star favors prairie to savanna situations with moist to slightly dry loamy soils.
