This eye catching perennial is found in woodland edges and savannas. This massive plant is clump forming and an excellent choice for a cottage garden. The clumps of puprle flowers smell faintly of vanilla and are a popular choice among pollinators and birds. It also makes an excellent cut flower. It associates with Allium canadense, Fraxinus americana, and Phlox divaricata.
