Fragaria virginiana

Wild Strawberry

Wild Strawberry, a beautiful groundcover spreading by runners, happily occurs in a wide variety of habitats. Pretty, white, five- petaled flowers begin to appear as early as April, and are visited by many species of bees, both for nectar and pollen. Delicately sweet, edible fruits follow in summer if not first discovered by wildlife. Many moths and skippers use it as a larval host and all types of mammals eat the foliage and fruit. It may go dormant in an exceptionally dry summer, but otherwise the foliage will turn a deep rich red in autumn.
