This short lived perennial is commonly found in prairies, fens, and savannas, and it will reseed itself heavily. The rich yellow flowers grow extremely upright on their stems, and make excellent cut flowers. It is commonly found with Anemone virginiana, Carex blanda, and Eutrochium purpurem in mesic savannas. In prairies, it is commonly found with Amorpha canescens, Coreopsis palmata, and Mondarda fistulosa. It is well loved by a variety of pollinators.
