Common Rush is found in prairie wetlands and will adapt to mesic soils. It can be aggressive in optimal conditions, but provides cover for wildlife. Loose brownish seedheads form just below the tips of the stems. It is used in Japan for making tatami mats for the home. From ancient times to modern history in England, Common Rush was used as ‘rushlights’, an inexpensive candle-like light.
