Lilium michiganense

Michigan Lily

Michigan lily is found in dry to mesic prairies, fens, and woodlands. It is found in high quality native areas, but also can be propogated in the home garden. It grows very upright with sprays of leaves coming of the stem. Whorls of orange flowers form in mid summer and last nearly a month. It is commonly found with Angelica atropurpurea, Carex stricta, and Iris virginica shrevei in fens; and with Carex buxbaumii, Helenium autumnale, and Pycanthemum virgianium in prairies. It attracts hummingbirds and monarch butterflies.
