Well known for its pop-pom like purple flowers, this perennial is found in the central southern midwestern states. It prefers thin, rocky soils, but makes an excellent choice for a home landscape. In the fall, its foliage will develop into a red color, and it is thought to be more mildew resistant than other monardas. It is associated with Sanguinaria canadensis, Smilax lasioneura, and Solidago ulmifolia. It is known to attract many pollinators, including a monarda specfic bee ( Doufourea monardae).
