This species is commonly found in dry and mesic prairies. It has light green, felty foliage that will turn a red in the fall. The flowers have a flatter growth pattern than other Solidagos, making it a good substitution for yarrow. It reseeds prolifically. It is often found with Eryngium yuccifolium, Liatris aspera, and Panicum virgatum. Prairie Chickens and Goldfinches enjoy the seeds of this plant.
