This cactus is found in sandy soils of prairies and savannas. It has thick pads and prominent white spines. The flowers are a vivid yellow color and attract a variety of pollinators it associates with Amorpha canescens, Coreopsis palmata, and Koeleria macrantha. In order for the seeds to germinate, they most ripen in their pads for over a year.
