This attractive hemi-parasitic species an be found in mesic to dry prairies and savannas. When they unfurl in the early spring, the lobed, frilly leaves are a rich red and become green as the season continues on. The flower spike rises above the basal foliage and attracts a variety of bumblebees. It can be found with Liatris aspera, Rudbeckia hirta, and Schizachyrium scoparium. This plant is being trialed as a method of combatting tall grass populations.
