This aquatic plant tends to grow in marshes and other types of wetlands. The foliage has two different morpholgies depending on if they are growing above or below water level. Those that grow above the water are lance shaped and green. Underwater, however, leaves are highly lobed and seratted, giving them a frilly apperance. Occasionally, they will take on a red color, especially if the water is clear. They can be found with Carex comosa, Phyla lanceolata, and Sagittaria latifolia.
