Bloodroot grows fequently in mesic woodlands. Before the trees leaf out, it produces a large white flower. In this stage of growth, the leaf wraps itself around the flower stem, and it slowly fans out after the flowering period is complete. It associates with Carex rosea, Geranium maculatum, and Helianthus strumosus. A compound in the stem is used in anti-plaque toothpaste and mouthwash.
