Scirpus atrovirens

Dark-green Bulrush

Short-lived and non-aggressive, Dark-green Bulrush is common in marshes and on shorlines. It grows up to 5′ tall in clumps that buffer other aquatics against wind & waves. This rush provides important food & cover to many species of waterfowl, songbirds, and shorebirds, as well as muskrats. Clusters of dark, chocolate colored seed are produced in late summer. Persists in saturated soils better than most.
