This clump forming graminoid is commonly found in a variety of wetlands. They prefer to be in standing water, and have attractive red-brown seedheads that will remain through the majority of winter. It is commonly found with Asclepia incarnata, Calmagrostis canadensis, and Iris virginica shrevei.
