Compass Plant is an iconic silphium associated with the prairie. At around eight feet high, its sturdy flower stalks send clusters of yellow daisy flowers skyward. The basal foliage is deeply lobed and sandy in texture. Compass Plant thrives in prairie to savanna situations in almost any soil and is especially drought tolerant and long-lived. Attractive to a wide range of pollinators, it tends orient its leaves on a north-south axis, giving rise to its common name.
