Silphium perfoliatum

Cup Plant

Another tall silphium, Cup Plant’s large rough leaves clasp its sturdy stem, creating a small basin that holds rainwater. At around eight feet high, it thrives in prairie to savanna situations and prefers wet-mesic to mesic soils. It can colonize in the right conditions. The loose cluster of yellow daisy flowers have fertile ray florets and sterile disc florets. Attractive to pollinators, goldfinches seek out the seeds and enjoy this natural birdbath.
