Silphium terebinthinaceum

Prairie Dock

This dramatic silphium earns a place in the garden with its huge spade-shaped rough leaves alone. Tall flower stalks topped with yellow daisies begin blooming in September. Prairie Dock is very long lived and has a deep tap root. It thrives in prairie to savanna situations in almost any soil. The dried leaves are excellent in arrangements. Attractive to pollinators, goldfinches will feast on the seeds.
