Indian Grass is one of the dominant species of the tallgrass prairie. At around six feet high, it can freely spread. The showy golden flowerheads bloom in late summer, becoming bronzy with age. A warm season grass, it thrives in prairies and savannas in mesic to dry soils. Several grasshoppers feed on it, among other insects, making Indian Grass attractive to birds for food and shelter.
