Symphyotrichum cordifolium

Arrow-leaved Aster

Arrow-leaved Aster is usually found in woodlands, but tolerates a wide array of light situations and does best in mesic to dry-mesic soils. Small, light blue to lavender daisy flowers with creamy to pale yellow disc florets begin blooming in August in loose pyramidal panicles. It can be distinguished by similar asters by its heart-shaped toothed leaves, narrow petioles and stems that are hairless or have lines of hairs. Asters are key pollinator plants that provide a welcome source of late-season nectar. Numerous moths use them as larval hosts.
