This plant enjoys growing in fens and wet prairies. It has an upright form, and forms compound leaves. It is diocious, with the male flowers being showier than the female flowers. It has red-purple stems. It assoicates with Carex buxbaumii, Silphium integrifolium, and Tradescantia ohiensis. This species tends to be resistant to browsing by deer and other mammals.
