This charming cool season perennial is found in open woodlands and savannas, most often in loamy soils. It has delicate, compound foliage that is similar to that of an Aquilegia. In the early spring, tassels of white to cream floweres dangle, more prominent on male specimes. It is commonly found with Actaea pachypoday, Carex rosea, and Phlox divaricata. Its genus roughly translates into “two blooms”, perhaps noting its dioecious nature.
