Building ecologically balanced communities through education
For those who know Jack Pizzo, President of Pizzo Native Plant Nursery, know that Jack has a special place in his heart for the University of Illinois. It is there where he sparked his passion for working with plants. Jack received his Bachelor of Science, majoring in ornamental horticulture and continued his education earning a Master of Science in natural resources with a focus on restoration ecology. Jack and his sister were also both members of the University of Illinois Horticulture Club.
Pizzo is proud to be a foundation donor for the University of Illinois Extension and we strongly believe others should follow suite in helping to restore our planet to its natural beauty. Beyond the beauty seen, there additional functions and benefits for ecological restoration.
What is The Red Oak Rain Garden?
The Red Oak Rain Garden soaks up rainwater, enhances the campus and community aesthetic and educational experience, and promotes well-being for everyone who visits. The rain garden was constructed in 2006 by Professor Tony Endress and his natural resources and environmental science class. In 2019, a new planting palette was installed.
As part of Illinois Extension and Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, the Red Oak Rain Garden Team believes in providing excellence in educational programming and providing accessible programs that help people solve problems. The rain garden does both! The Team creates service-learning opportunities for students and community volunteers and inspires visitors to find out how they can create healthier landscapes where they live.
