This rare species grows in mesic woodlands. It has large, fan shape leaves. Three of these leaves appear whorled on the stem to create an umbrella-like appearance. The red bloom grows above the leaves and resembles a pinwheel. It has a slightly foul odor, much like rotting flesh. Common associates include Allium canadnese, Carex pensylvanica, and Polygonatum biflorum.
