Wetland Indicator

Planting In Wetland Or Non-wetland Areas

Wetland indicator status is a classification used to describe a plant’s likelihood of occurring in wetland or non-wetland areas, helping in habitat restoration and conservation planning. Native plants are categorized based on their affinity for wet conditions, with indicators such as obligate wetland (OBL), which grow almost exclusively in wetlands, and facultative wetland (FACW), which often appear in wetlands but can also grow in non-wetland areas. Facultative (FAC) species are equally likely in wetlands or uplands, while facultative upland (FACU) and upland (UPL) species primarily inhabit drier, non-wetland sites. Recognizing these indicators in native plants helps create balanced wetland and riparian ecosystems, providing habitat for specialized wetland wildlife and improving water filtration and flood control.
